NFPA 275 Logic

NFPA 275 Logic

Seen here is the 2018 IBC Code for Thermal Barriers verbatim. We have highlighted the individual 'Compliance' and 'Approval' sections, which are further described below. Note, 'Approvals' need ongoing, third party, system evaluation reports. 'Compliance' only requires direct code documentation.

Prescriptive Compliance - Standard 12 inch gypsum wallboard code compliance.

Equivalent Compliance - Code here directly stipulates that material that "meets acceptance criteria of both the Temperature Transmission Fire Test and the Integrity Fire test of NFPA 275" are classified as true Thermal Barriers. This is how our Firestable™ FS 2.0 NFPA 275 Thermal Barrier SPF meets the definition of a true Thermal Barrier.

2603.9 - Special Approval section of code. This is where expensive SPF 'Thermal Barrier Coatings' over spray foam find code approval. Driven by ESR based code compliance.

Here we have a visualization of the level of Code Compliance Firestable™ FS 2.0 NFPA 275 Thermal Barrier SPF achieves, as well as the related marketplace applications it can be utilized for.

As can be seen, at the lowest level of code compliance and market application are the Kit Foams and Appendex X foams. These meet Ignition Barrier (2603.1 above) and are applicable in certain Attics and Crawlspaces.

The next level up is the Special Approval systems (2603.9 above), which consists of SPF and Special Approval Thermal Barrier coatings. While useable in all conditioned interior spaces, it is an expensive and time consuming process.

Next is exterior spaces, where if SPF is to be used an Air Barrier and Water Barrier are required, as well as even more costly exterior grade Thermal Barrier coating systems.

The broadest compliance is where our Firestable™ FS 2.0 NFPA 275 Thermal Barrier SPF falls, which by its definition as Certified Thermal Barrier (Equivalent Compliance above) is equivalent to Prescriptive Compliance. This means it is applicable in all previously mentioned applications, as well any application prescriptive gypsum board would be required for.
